What we know about you.
Short version: we take an order, we bring you breakfast. There is no account to make, no password to keep and no card details to hand over. Here is the longer version, in plain English.
the short version
What we ask you for
When you place an order through the basket, we ask for your name, phone number, delivery address and pincode, and optionally a preferred date. We need these to make the delivery and to call you if the driver cannot find you.
When you use a form on the site (contact, wholesale, gather booking or the newsletter), we get whatever you type into it. Usually that is your name, email and your message.
When you pay online at checkout, your payment is handled by our secure payment provider. Card, UPI and bank details are entered on the provider’s own secure page, they never reach this website and we never see or store them. We only receive confirmation that the payment succeeded, plus the name, contact and delivery details you gave us with the order. If you order over WhatsApp instead, we send you a payment link there.
When the basket sends you to WhatsApp — which happens for some products, and for every hamper, corporate gifting enquiry and subscription — the order is written out for you inside the WhatsApp message itself. That message carries the details you typed on this site: your name, your delivery address and pincode, your phone number, the items, and a gift note or preferred date if you added one. It is composed in your own browser and nothing is sent until you press send in WhatsApp, but from that point the details sit in a WhatsApp conversation with us and are covered by WhatsApp’s terms as well as ours. If you would rather not use WhatsApp, pay at the checkout instead, or write to us at the address below.
What stays in your browser
Some things are saved on your own device so the site is less annoying to use. They live in your browser's local storage, not on a server of ours, and we cannot read them from here.
- Your basket, so it survives a refresh.
- Your name, phone and address, if you have ordered before, so checkout is pre-filled. The "not you?" button on checkout clears this.
- Your last order, so "order my usual" can rebuild it.
- Your taste quiz answers, if you took the quiz.
- Your last order reference, so you can quote it to us if you ever need to.
- Where you found us: the link or search that first brought you here and the one that brought you this time (an Instagram post or a Google search, say), and whether you are browsing inside the Instagram or Facebook app. This one is attached to your order when you check out, so we can tell which posts bring customers. It never holds your name or contact details.
Clearing your browser data removes all of it. Nothing here follows you to another device.
Who else sees it
We are a small kitchen, not a data company, so we lean on a few outside services to run this site. Each one is listed here because it can see something about you.
- Shopify. Checkout on this site runs on Shopify. The name, phone number, email and delivery address you enter at checkout, and the record of the order itself, are held on Shopify's own servers, which sit outside India. Shopify processes that information for us under their terms as well as ours.
- Razorpay. Payments at checkout are taken by Razorpay. Your card, UPI or bank details are entered on their secure page, never reach this website and are never seen or stored by us. They tell us only that the payment succeeded.
- WhatsApp (Meta). Orders can also be placed by sending us a WhatsApp message. That conversation sits in WhatsApp and is covered by their privacy terms as well as ours. The message is pre-written with your order details, including your name, address and pincode, so those details reach Meta when you send it.
- FormSubmit. The site's forms are relayed to our inbox through FormSubmit, so a form you submit passes through them on the way to us. Every order placed on this site is also sent through FormSubmit as a backup copy to our inbox, so an order is never lost if the checkout or the WhatsApp message fails. That copy carries the same order details, never your payment details.
- Vercel. The site is hosted by Vercel, so their servers handle every page you load and see your IP address in the process.
- Vercel Web Analytics. We count page views. It is cookieless, it does not follow you to other websites, and it never records your name, your address or what you typed into a form.
- Meta Pixel (Facebook and Instagram), only if you allow it. When you first visit, a small bar asks whether we may use cookies to see which of our Facebook and Instagram ads bring people here. Nothing from Meta loads unless you tap Allow. If you do, the Meta Pixel records the pages you view and whether you add something to your basket, start a checkout or send us an order on WhatsApp, and Meta may link that to your Facebook or Instagram account under their own privacy terms. It never receives your payment details. You can change your answer at any time with “Cookie choices” at the foot of every page. Checkout itself runs on Shopify, which also reports completed purchases to Meta through its Facebook & Instagram connection.
- Google Analytics, only if you allow it. If you tap Allow on the cookie bar, we also use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages and products people look at, whether something goes into the basket or a checkout is started, and which pincodes we could not deliver to yet. Nothing from Google loads unless you tap Allow. If you do, Google receives your browser and device details, the pages you visit and a cookie that recognises a returning visit, and handles them under its own privacy terms. It never receives your name, phone number, address or payment details. You can change your answer at any time with “Cookie choices” at the foot of every page.
- Klaviyo (our emails). If you sign up for our emails, your email address is held by Klaviyo, the service we send our emails through, and you can unsubscribe from any email we send. If you also tap Allow on the cookie bar, Klaviyo records which products you view on this site and what you add to your basket, so an email from us can be about something you looked at. That stays anonymous until you give us your email. You can change your answer at any time with “Cookie choices” at the foot of every page.
The typefaces and animation scripts used to load from Google Fonts, cdnjs and jsDelivr. They are now served from this site itself, so those three no longer see you at all.
Apart from the Meta Pixel, Google Analytics and Klaviyo’s tracking above, which only run if you allow them, we run no advertising pixels or tracking cookies. Nobody is buying your data from us, because we are not selling it.
How long we keep it
Order records — what you ordered, what it cost and where it went — are kept for 8 years from the end of the financial year they fall in, because Indian tax law requires us to be able to produce them for that long. After that they are deleted.
Enquiries and messages that are not orders are kept for as long as we need them to answer you and to sort out anything that follows, and no longer. Anything saved in your browser is yours and disappears when you clear it.
Children
This site is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18, and there is nothing here that asks a child for their details. If you believe a child has given us information, write to us and we will delete it.
Your rights
Email info@bybreakofdawn.com and ask. There is no form to fill in for any of this. Just write to us, and we will:
- Tell you what we hold about you, and what we have done with it.
- Correct it, or complete it, if any of it is wrong or out of date.
- Erase it, where we are not required to keep it for the tax period above.
- Take a nomination. You can name someone to exercise these rights on your behalf if you die or become unable to do so yourself.
If you are not happy with how we answer, take it to our grievance officer below. If you are still not happy, you can escalate the complaint to the Data Protection Board of India, which you may do without going through us first.
